Christ Connect - A Weekly Update from Central Lutheran Church, Elk River, MN
Central Lutheran Church Christ Connect
A Message from Paul

Central Family,

Last Sunday two persons referred me to two different books about children;

"Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children" by Betty Hart & Todd R. Risley and "No; Why Kids of All Ages Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It" by David Walsh. How timely given text from the Matthew Odyssey for this Sunday; Matthew 18.

Matthew 18:4-5 teaches us; "Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." At the heart of the Extreme Sunday Makeover is the understanding of the role and importance of the child in the Christian movement. In fact Jesus goes on to say in Matthew 18:6; If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea."

Sobering words to say the least! This Sunday we will try to unpack some of Jesus' word on the importance of children in light of what we know about the first years of life. For instance in the book Meaningful Differences we read;

"The first years of life are overwhelmingly important because not only survival but all of an infant's experience of the world depends on other people.The first 3 years are a time when children are uniquely susceptible to the culture of adults. The helplessness of human infants makes them both particularly vulnerable and especially malleable. Research continues to demonstrate how fine are the auditory and visual discriminations infants can make in the very first months of life. We know that by age 2 the growth and mylenization of nerve cells is almost complete and that by age 4 cortical development is largely finished."

Much of the impetus for the Extreme Sunday Makeover is based in Jesus' radical inclusion of children. Jesus insisted that children be fully included and the more we learn from child development research the more sense it makes. Maybe when we learn enough we might come to the conclusion that the Lord really does know what is best!

See you on Sunday!

Paul

Relay for Life
So you think you don’t know anyone with Cancer… think again!  Take a look around the sanctuary (it’s ok, take a peak); cancer has most likely affected someone in every pew in one-way or another.  Cancer touches so many of our friends and family and the Relay For Life is a great way to help fight this terrible disease.  Four teams from Central & friends (that’s 60+ individuals) will be “coming down the track for a cure” on Friday, August 3 as walkers from 6:30 PM to 6:30 AM - Saturday.

How can you help?
1) Purchase a $10 luminary bag in memory or in honor of someone you know;
2) Make a donation ~ use your offering envelope; leave it at the office or stop by the table TODAY;
3) Come out and walk.....
