Are We a Shunnamite Household?

Central Family,

This Sunday our Sanctuary services gather around the story of the wealthy Shunammite woman (2 Kings 4:8-17).  While the story of the Shunammite woman might be unfamiliar today, she served as an important example for Christ followers in the 19th century.  In American religious history, there was a tradition known as “Shunammite households” which played an important role in the growth of frontier faith communities.

Traveling preachers had to endure harsh weather, bad roads and poor food as they traveled about their “circuit.” In response to their needs numerous homes were designated as “Shunammite households.” Each of these would maintain a “prophet’s chamber” – a room that was always available on a moment’s notice to provide hospitality. Somewhere along the line the “Shunammite tradition” has disappeared. Obviously things have changed and there is a lot of danger on our streets but part and parcel of being a Christian is the art of hospitality. A spirit of hospitality is one that recognizes that Christ often comes to us in and through the stranger.

What would it look like if your household was a Shunammite household?

What would it look like if Central was a Shunammite congregation?

Jim Wallis tells how on Saturdays the Sojourners Community opens a food line to the hungry and homeless of Washington who live within sight of the White House. Before they open their doors, they gather around the food, hold hands and led in prayer by Mary Glover – a woman who herself stood in line a few years earlier. Wallis says “she prays as if she knows the person with whom she’s talking,” and this is what she prays: “Lord, we know you’ll be coming through this line today. So help us to treat you well.”

This is our prayer; LORD, HELP US – the Central Family – TO TREAT YOU WELL TODAY!
