Our Shepherd
“Our Father, who art in heaven …”
“For God so loved the world …”
“The Lord bless you and keep you …”
Close to the heart of the believer is a three thousand year old song composed by a boy watching his sheep:
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil – for you are with me.
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
These are dear words at least in part because they contain so much meaning. In a world where we strive to be independent, self-sufficient, and competitive, this song reminds us that we are dependent on the God who is our Shepherd. While we struggle to find the right direction, he offers to lead us. We calculate and invest to protect ourselves against difficult tomorrows, but he promises to lead us through the darkest valley. And he promises that beyond life’s end is not just a banquet, but an eternity of goodness and mercy in God’s presence.
Ponder these words today! And as you meet Jesus once again in this song, remember that he said, “I am the good shepherd. I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10) Because Jesus gave his life for us, we live with the promise of God’s love – now and through eternity!

Sponsoring a child through Central provides education, school uniforms, supplies and food for orphans and semi-orphans in our sister congregations of Kibena and Matingajola in Southern Tanzania.
Each week people meet together for a meal, a talk on topics such as "Who is Jesus?", "Why Did Jesus Die?", "How Can I be Sure of My Faith?", and "Does God Still Heal Today?" , followed by small group interaction. There is an optional one-day retreat, which focuses on the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
