Practicing Contemplation PDF Print E-mail

Join other women on a spiritual pilgrimage as we practice the ancient art of contemplation (meditating on scripture). Occasional offerings are held at Central for those who are curious. In addition, we offer a semi-silent retreat experience, one week-end a year, at a local retreat/conference center.

Women’s Book Discussion PDF Print E-mail

Women's Book Discussion's new book is the award-winning novel  Mudbound by Hilary Jordan.   It's a story of racism and well-kept secrets. Set on a desolate farm in the Mississippi Delta at the end of World War II, the novel explores the complex relations between two families: the owners of the land, and the sharecroppers who live and work on it.The discussion will be on Tuesday, March 13 at 1:30p.m. at the Elk River Activity Center.  Women of all ages are encouraged to come.  The book is available at Corner Bookstore & More.

UPCOMING:

Mighty Be Our Powers: How Sisterhood, Prayer, and Sex Changed a Nation at War by Leymah Gbowee, the 2011 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.  She helped organize a coalition of Christian and Muslim women who sat together in public protest against the continuing war, confronting Liberia's ruthless president and rebel warlords.  Their peaceful demonstrations culminated in the ousting of the president and the election of Ellen Sirleaf, Africa's first head of state.  Gbowee, a Lutheran, is a columnist for Newsweek but still lives in Liberia.

Have a Little Faith by Mitch Album---Oprah.com chose this book as the best nonfiction book for 2009.  It is the story of an elderly Detroit rabbi and a younger Christian pastor who, along with Album, explore issues that perplex modern man and how their faith provides great comfort.

Please share this with others who may want to read these and to join us in discussing them. As usual, these books will be available at Corner Bookstore & More and our Central library.
